  2. With its spaceship look, Shu Uemura Rouge Unlimited Supreme Matte offers richly pigmented hues; when enriched with hydrating agents, it feels like a comfy lip balm.
  3. If you’re looking for a true object of desire, Tom Ford Lip Color Matte is a great pick. The tantalising packaging hides luxurious colours, while its unique formula smooths comfortably onto the lips.

    Join the Liquid Team

  4. In the liquid-matte family, ask for Lime Crime Velvetines Matte Liquid Lipsticks. This cruelty-free vegan lipstick is inspired by the colours and the soft touch of rose petals. Isn’t that the key to a romantic kiss?
  5. To complete a natural summer look, make room for Yves Saint Laurent Baby Doll Kiss & Blush. It instantly makes your lips feel velvety and adds a soft dash of colour to your cheeks.
  6. Planning a crazy night out? Reach for the avant-garde Urban Decay Vice Liquid Lipstick. This waterproof formula glides on as easily as a lip gloss, but dries matte with a trendy, glitzy finish. Make sure to swipe on a coat before going out.

Falsies but Goodies

April 28, 2017 / by Charlotte Ligiée

When one looks at today’s desire for endlessly long eyelashes, it’s hard to fathom that during medieval times, women used to pluck them out in order to look fantastic. Indeed, the current battle against unwanted hair seems to be taking place a little bit lower…

Far from the cold castles of the Middle Ages, long eyelashes made their dramatic comeback under the spotlight of Hollywood. Film director DW Griffith and famous make-up artist Max Factor were among the earliest to bring false lashes to the silver screen. Griffith wanted Seena Owen, the actress in his 1916 film Intolerance, to have “eyelashes brushing her cheeks”. They had to go beyond mascara to fulfil this fantasy – and falsies were born.

Over the years, false eyelashes have continued to evolve. They now come in every size, shape and material you could imagine. Whether you want to give a natural enhancement to your everyday look or get a dramatic theatrical gaze, there’s something for everyone in this selection.

So now you’re ready to say goodbye to your mascara? Here’s some crucial advice for applying your false lashes properly:

  • Do your make-up first and then apply the lashes, so that they won’t be dusted with powder and glitter.
  • If necessary, trim the lashes to fit your eyes length – from the outer end for a natural look, or from the inner end to keep the longest lashes.
  • Apply a small drop of lash glue to the strip with a cotton swab and bend it slowly into a horseshoe shape. Wait 30 seconds for the glue to become slightly sticky. Expert tip: use black glue, which perfectly disappears among natural lashes.
  • Apply the strip as close to your natural lash line as possible and start with the internal corner of your eye.
  • Finally, gently press on the extremities of the strip with a thin brush handle or a dedicated applicator.

Beards: Bits and Bobs

March 31, 2017 / by Jon Braun

  • Accept your limits. Some people tend to grow facial hair that’s thick and full, while others are only able to manage wispy and patchy. Heartbreaking, but it’s pretty much down to genetics. Just be sure to choose a style that suits your growth potential.

  • Be patient, man. Resist those violent urges to trim or style your beard immediately. Give it about four to six weeks until the hairs have grown in evenly. This is also that dreaded “itchy” phase, so you (and your partner) will have to grin and bear it for about a month.

  • Consider your face’s unique shape. After your beard has grown in enough, choose a suitable style to complement it. If your face is wide, go for one that keeps the sides to a minimum and adds some length. Got a longer face? Grow the sides fuller and keep the length in check.

  • Say no to the neckbeard. You want to maintain a defined shape and neckline. Aim for a beard that’s full under your chin and all the way around your jaw, and not straggling below that line.

  • Wash up, boys. Just like the hair on the rest of your head, you need to wash your beard regularly – every two to three days. Get some beard shampoo. It’s specifically designed to avoid chemicals that strip out the natural sebum oils from your facial hair follicles. It’ll also help keep things less bristly.

  • Dude, dry it right. After showering, gently pat your beard with a towel. And put away that hairdryer – it’s unnecessarily harsh and can dry out the skin underneath.

  • Bust out the beard comb and train those hairs to grow in properly. It’ll have a wide-toothed area (for the thicker parts) and a fine-toothed area (for your moustache). Comb outwards, starting from the neckline towards the chin, then moving up the jawline. Take it slow, especially with any knots. Then, style it downwards with a brush.

  • Sculpt away. Trim your beard at least every few weeks, depending on its length and the speed of growth. You’ve got two options: barber’s scissors or a beard trimmer. Start from the bottom, move on to the sides – and don’t rush things. That three-way mirror can come in handy as you shape to perfection.

  • Make sure a a good pair of moustache scissors makes the cut. They’ll be for precision when you’re trimming the hairs that grow over your upper lip and will help get those rogue stragglers in your beard. Plucking is totally painful – not at all recommended.

  • Give yourself a massage. That’s right, with some beard oil or beard balm. By moisturising the facial hair and the skin beneath it, you’ll keep the bristliness to a minimum and those hairs will be more manageable.

  • Wax on, wax off. Moustache wax will keep things in line on your upper lip. It’ll come in handy if you want to channel your inner Salvador Dali, too.

  • Time to admire your sexy self in the mirror. Now that you’ve got that perfect beard, get ready to strut with confidence and revel in the compliments. And perhaps it’s time to consider a career change? Lumberjacks are in high demand these days…

A Hirsute Return

March 31, 2017 / by China Daily

The world is celebrating a resurgence – of facial hair. On Glamour’s 100 Sexiest Men 2017 list, eight of the top ten guys are at various stages of bearded-ness. Though the smouldering billionaire Christian Grey in the movie Fifty Shades of Grey and its recent sequel Fifty Shades Darker is clean-shaven on screen, the real-life Jamie Dornan, who topped this year’s list, has a healthy set of whiskers. Of course, there are various styling considerations when it comes to growing a beard. Check out a few of the sexy gentlemen from the top of the list – and the popular styles they’ve been sporting:

Jamie Dornan: The Extended Goatee

Also called the Hollywoodian, this vintage look connects a moustache and a goatee, and extends up the jawline. Jamie switches between this style and the full beard, but he had to shave it bare for Fifty Shades of Grey.

Aidan Turner:
The Full Beard

The traditional full beard is a face that’s chock full of connected whiskers. It’s also considered the most manly style of beard – if it’s well groomed.

James McAvoy:
The Balbo

Named for Italo Balbo, Mussolini’s right-hand man in the lead-up to the Second World War, this style combines a moustache with hair on the chin and a “soul patch” under the lower lip. It’s also been sported by Robert Downey Jr in recent years.

A Wrinkle in Time

March 31, 2017 / by China Daily

“Wrinkled, wrinkled little star; hope they never see the scars.” So said a wry Meryl Streep in the 1992 movie Death Becomes Her – and indeed, discovering the fountain of youth has been an unending quest since the dawn of time.

Enter Botox, a lethal neurotoxin (technically “botulinum toxin type A”) that relaxes muscles via injection and was discovered to help reduce wrinkles by a California plastic surgeon in 1989. After a long period of formal trials, it was approved for use in the US in 2002 – and has since become a household name as the world’s most common cosmetic procedure.

Long used by women, in the early Botox days, there were few male clients; most did it for occupational reasons, such as actors and anchormen. Through wider acceptance in society, it has become more common for men in recent years. Some clinics in Hong Kong even claim that male clients compose 50% of their business today. The rise in popularity explains how the humorous nickname “Brotox” has entered the vernacular.

Where do guys get their Brotox injected? They say the eyes are the key to the soul – and so the most popular areas address crow’s feet and the vertical lines between the eyebrows. These lines can make a man look angry and unapproachable, which is why nine-time Olympic swimming champion Mark Spitz, an open endorser of Botox, wanted to try it in the first place. In an interview with plastic surgery website Make Me Heal, Spitz explained, “I wasn’t trying to look younger or different; I just wanted my face to portray how good I was feeling inside – instead of telling the world that I was perplexed or angry all the time.”

Concerned about “surprise lines” on your forehead? Those annoying, intractable lines can also make you look older than you actually are, so a considerable amount of Botox treatments are focused on this area. However, it’s hard to completely remove them because this is an easy-to-crease area.

Botox has been nicknamed the “lunchtime facelift” because it can be done in less than 15 minutes. Expect to see effects after two weeks of injection, with the best results after about a month. In Hong Kong, the standard practice is to have a consultation session with your doctor before deciding what areas to address and how many shots are needed. Fees are charged per area or per unit, depending on the clinic; locally, some start at HK$3,000 per treatment package of 10 units. You don’t need to drastically change your routine or eating habits. Just avoid alcohol on the first day of injection and don’t apply pressure to the area. So, what are your plans for lunch?

Cat Got Your Eye?

March 31, 2017 / by Charlotte Ligiée

Elizabeth Taylor, Marilyn Monroe, Maria Callas and Amy Winehouse all made the cat eye part of their signature look. From street style to the runway, there’s no such thing as mere eyeliner when it comes to seducing at first sight.

Kim Bourhila, a Paris-based make-up artist for Shu Uemura, raises the eyeliner level to the art of calligraphy. “I love to do cat-eye make-up because it dramatically transforms one’s eye expression,” he says. “Eyeliner is something you can endlessly play with to create all kinds of looks: natural, dramatic, graphic, artistic… Once you master it, the sky’s the limit.”

“It’s true that applying eyeliner can be challenging at the beginning, but mastery comes with practice, “says Bourhila. “No need to sit for hours on the make-up chair to get a lovely cat eye.” He adds, with a knowing smile: “And don’t aim for perfect symmetrical lines, or you may go crazy and run the risk of ruining everything.”

Whether you’re a newbie or a seasoned expert, you can be sure that there’s a perfect liner waiting for you. Here are some of Bourhila’s professional tricks for a flawless line.

  • For a longer-lasting cat eye, start by dusting on some powder (light eyeshadow or translucent face powder) on your eyelid.
  • Sit at a large mirror and don’t close your eyes when you draw your lines.
  • Step back from time to time to see the whole picture and adjust accordingly.
  • Keep calm and don’t rush: start with thin lines and accentuate progressively.
  • Note that two or three strokes are often necessary to get the right result.
  • First draw the lash line and define the wing, then refine the top line to get an even overall shape.
  • Last but not least, keep a cotton swab close to hand and use it like an eraser to correct your lines if necessary.

About Kim Bourhila

A make-up artist for Shu Uemura for more than 15 years, he is the only French “Shu Ari” (Shu Uemura artistic make-up master). In 2006, he won a worldwide Shu Uemura beauty competition with his make-up creation Bird of Paradise. Bourhila has also worked backstage at numerous fashion shows for brands such as Hanae Mori, Sonia Rykiel, Cacharel and Chantal Thomass. One of the fondest memories of his career was doing the make-up for his favourite star: Madonna.

The polka-dot cat eye

If you’re in an artistic mood, go for pointillism. Give free rein to your creativity and draw a unique, stylish cat eye.

The straight line

This straight, modern shape is particularly elegant on Asian eyelids. Quite easy to achieve, it’s the perfect go-to cat eye for everyday wear. Draw a thin line for natural daytime make-up, or thicken it to go bold and dramatic.

The Twiggy eye

The ’60s fashion icon Twiggy used to draw lashes on her lower eyelids to get a doll-like look. The upper line was round and short, and she added a stroke of dark eyeshadow in the natural crease of her eyes.

The double-winged eyeliner

This cat eye gives a stunning eye-opening effect. Did you know that Marilyn Monroe used to add a thin white triangle between the two lines to make her eyes look even wider?

The classic winged eyeliner

Worn in the ’50s by the greatest divas, this sophisticated cat eye was brought to the fore in the ’80s by Thierry Mugler. This line is a must for those who want to unleash their inner tiger.

The scent includes ingredients sourced from all over the globe, perfect for the jet-setting man of the world.

For those looking for a scent evoking the great outdoors, look no further than Dior Sauvage. Fresh and vibrant, the cologne bursts with natural ingredients; top notes include the extremely fresh Reggio di Calabria bergamot. Meanwhile, Chanel Allure Homme Sport is a highly sophisticated, fail-safe cologne – and you can take the scent into the bath with the line’s Allure Homme Sport Shower Gel, which is invigorating, refreshing and perfewct for freshening up after the gym.

A thorough skincare routine is essential for the dapper gent, and the Kiehl’s line of male products address every facial and shaving need. The Facial Fuel Energizing Face Wash removes impurities and gives skin a much-needed fresher and healthier look. Building on the popularity of the brand’s Facial Fuel Energizing Moisture Treatment – its first treatment specifically for men – the Facial Fuel Anti-Wrinkle Cream helps reduce fine lines and improve facial firmness, combatting signs of ageing or tired skin; it’s a great choice to use at night after cleaning your face.

Another anti-ageing skincare option that’s specifically for gents is Profile. The brand offers a full range of toxin-free products including the Recharge Age Combating Serum, Lift Anti-Gravity Moisturizer, Revive Under Eye Rescue and Action Rehydrating Cleanser. Profile was launched by the perpetually young-looking 52-year-old actor Rob Lowe, who has also unveiled the brand’s inaugural fragrance, 18 Amber Wood.

Perricone MD takes a holistic approach to skincare by promoting an anti-inflammatory diet with nutritional supplements and advanced skincare. Some of the brand’s signature products include the Re:Firm skin-smoothing face treatment and the OVM serum, a dermatologist-grade anti-ageing compound. Products come in old-fashioned glass apothecary bottles and are a welcome addition to any bathroom counter.

Try something different with your haircare regimen and give perennial salon favourite Bed Head by Tigi a shot. The brand’s men’s line features bath products including the Charge Up Thickening Shampoo and Conditioner, as well as a range of styling pomades such as Slick Trick and Power Play.

This summer, get ready to look and feel fresher than fresh.

Good Enough to Eat

December 22, 2015 / by Bei Li

An innovative new breed of skincare is making waves in the mainstream beauty world. Natural and organic beauty products may have been on the lips and faces of those in the know for a while now, but this new concept shows that beauty has never been so healthy.

The products from Australian skincare brand Edible Beauty are literally good enough to eat. Edible Beauty takes an innovative approach to ingredients rather than relying on chemicals found in traditional skincare; fermented radish root is used as a preservative instead of alcohol, while rice is used as an exfoliator instead of extremely harmful plastic microbeads. The brand’s Core Four range includes a milk cleanser, a fig and bilberry hydrating mist toner, a kakadu and Davidson’s plum anti-ageing serum, and a vanilla silk hydrating lotion.

Lhamour is a new skincare label from Mongolia, whose beautifully designed packaging hides a wealth of rich and healthy ingredients inside. The brand uses local ingredients and includes oils such as sea buckthorn oil, which is made from dried sea buckthorn fruit and is a great anti-ageing option. Goat’s and yak’s milk feature in a range of handmade soaps and bath bombs, while goat’s tail is perfect for extremely dry skin due to its moisturising benefits.

New Zealand is renowned for its wealth of locally sourced natural ingredients, which skincare brand Oxygen draws on for its full skincare range aimed at women and teens alike. Organic extracts such as aloe, avocado oil, kiwi fruit and raspberry water offer alternatives to chemicals, while manuka honey forms the base of Oxygen’s purifying facial masque, which also uses botanical actives, natural aromas and organic hops to restore suppleness, moisture and radiance for all skin types.

US brand Intelligent Nutrients offers organic skin, body and haircare options packed with food-grade ingredients. The new OneBody range features products for the whole body, such as the Fruit Bioactive Science OneBody Refiner, which uses fruit bioactive enzymes and willow bark to rejuvenate skin, while coffee extract opens pores to receive optimum nourishment. The PureServe range is the world’s first organic colour-saving shampoo, conditioner and hair shield; it uses brown algae, tilia and quinoa plant bioactives.

Parents can also pamper their babies with organic choices, thanks to British brand Little Butterfly London. Britain’s first organic-certified luxury skincare range for babies, the label also offers a range of skincare options for mothers. Products are full of healthy oils; the revitalising day cream and body lotion is infused with mandarin and orange pure essential oils, as well as moisturising cucumber seed oil, papaya, peach and apricot kernel oil.

With good-enough-to-eat products like these, you’ll be feasting on beauty – just be sure to keep these products off your plate and on your face.

Makes Scents

October 30, 2015 / by China Daily

How would you characterise the olfactory world of Prada?

Prada fragrances aren’t driven by consumer testing, so the emphasis is on exploring fragrances that suit the unique identity of the brand. Working at Prada is definitely an environment that favours invention and creativity – and there is a culture of free-spirited innovation that extends to all its fragrances.

What was your initial idea for the Les Infusions de Prada collection?

The idea was to further explore fragrances that evoke the customs of luxurious, old-world perfumeries and question our memory of the past, all while juxtaposing this with a new, unexpected and forward-looking world view of Prada.

Could you talk about Prada’s interpretation of infusion?

The key word in the question is “interpretation”. Traditionally, infusions were a process to dissolve the principal elements of raw material in alcohol over a period of several months. In creating the Les Infusions de Prada collection, we took the idea – and the word – “infusion” as a starting point to inspire us to explore entirely new concepts in perfumery. We developed a perfume formula that would give the impression that a flower had been infused in water.

From a chemical perspective, how did you go about creating space and lightness between the stronger notes in each of the fragrances?

All the fragrances in the collections have something in common: I made a common base, which I call the “spirit of infusion”. It’s the perfect temperature of water in which to put the refined formula of the ingredients. By putting the formula in this watery surrounding, it allows the fragrance to come and go – to develop this sense of subtle airiness. And, of course, the notion of the spirit of infusion acts as the ideal metaphor for being infused in the spirit of Prada.

Why did Prada choose to expand on an existing collection, rather than start a new one?

It made sense to further explore and reinterpret Les Infusions because they represent something unique in the world of contemporary fragrance. As a range of six different olfactory propositions, it makes the whole collection more coherent, more diverse and more of an ensemble that can be added to in the future.

What makes Les Infusions different from other fragrances?

Because of the way they’re created, you’re aware of an impression of the ingredients; you’re not overwhelmingly fragranced and there’s something very subtle, yet obviously present. You smell these infusions in a very airy way – it’s not overpowering – and there’s a connection between the person smelling it and the person wearing it. It’s fragrant, yet you can still smell the person’s skin. That’s a different way of presenting freshness in perfumery: it’s not like a cologne, which is sparkling and then gone. This collection evokes a watercolour that stays on the skin and evolves around you like a tender veil.

Are the fragrances blended to be used one at a time or to be mixed?

Each fragrance stands apart. They are not meant to be mixed.

Why did Prada decide to develop a fragrance collection without gender?

Miuccia Prada has always wanted to resist clichés and stereotypes in Prada’s fragrances. I personally believe good fragrances don’t have a gender. The idea of what a woman and a man should smell like is too basic. So when a fragrance is not gender-oriented, it means that it won’t determine the gender of the person who should wear it.

Bling Beauty

Diamonds are no longer just a girl's best friend because they look good. They, along with other exquisite jewels and precious metals such as pearls and platinum, are increasingly also valued for their beauty-enhancing qualities when applied directly to the skin, with the emergence of a new generation of creams, lotions and elixirs.

Skincare brand Trésor Rare, for instance, is renowned for its unique range created with only the most exclusive luxury ingredients, such as diamonds, pearls, sapphires and gold. The brand offers an extensive product range targeting anti-ageing and hydration, including the Express Tightening Lifting Mask (HK$10,880), which combines plant extracts, gold, diamonds and pearls; and the BX-Skin Relaxor Thermal Mask (HK$14,900), which boasts an equally impressive list of ingredients including 24-karat gold, diamonds, pearls, sapphires and rare plant extractions such as plant stem cells and myrtle.

The key ingredient in Chantecaille’s Nano Gold Energising Cream (HK$3,255) is 24-karat gold particles; they boost collagen production and skin-cell regeneration for youthful skin. Paris based anti-ageing expert Orlane also turns to 24-karat gold for its signature Crème Royale line. Orlane’s exclusive Royal Jelly treatment includes the Elixir Royal (HK$5,000), which detoxifies and energises the skin while preventing it from slackening.

Cult Swiss skincare brand La Prairie has used platinum, one of the world’s most precious metals, to create its eponymous collection. The Cellular Cream Platinum Rare (HK$9,294) rejuvenates and boasts anti-ageing benefits such as line and wrinkle reduction.

No elite skincare routine would be complete without matching luscious lashes. Krē•āt beauty’s artisan hand-foiled false eyelashes come in 24-karat gold (HK$2,286) or a combination of 0.2-karat diamonds set on 18-karat gold lashes (HK$10,436).

So treat yourself: beauty has never been so bling.

Au Naturel

A “less is more” philosophy is central to this aesthetic.  Think minimal and natural makeup for a leading runway look - perfect for humid climates.  Clear, clean skin is king here and aims for high-shine rather than a matte powdered look.  Marc Jacobs celebrated bare-faced beauty, and at Proenza Schouler a mere swipe of concealer and the models were runway-ready.

Bright Eyes

Bold and bright eyes are statement-makers this season. Dramatic eyeshadows and vibrant eyeliners are the go-to products for this look.  Pair this with a nude, clear lip to make sure all eyes are on you. Whether a heavily smudged rock star look à la Tom Ford, or the glitter a go-go look seen at Ashish, this season it’s definitely all about the eyes.

50 Shades of Red

The classic red lip is never too long out of the fashion spotlight and this season it comes in a plethora of shades of red. Models at Burberry Prorsum were striking in scarlet, while Dolce & Gabbana’s lipstick look embraced deeper and more romantic berry hues.

Hidden Treasure

This season sees all sorts of precious items nestled in hair or adorning hairstyles. Models at Valentino decorated their loose waves with delicate golden seashells; while Céline’s circular barette hair clips were simply sublime.

The New Cat-Eye

The retro cat-eye look seems here to stay, so keep a hold of your black liners for this season.  For a fresher more fashion-forward look, try lining the eyelid from the centre outwards, just like Céline and Prada’s lovely ladies.
