The Planets Align

August 25, 2017 / by Lily May Wong

Each of us has our own unique birth chart, depicting the positions of the planets at the moment we were born. But planets orbiting around the sun (which is also a planet, astrologically speaking) over the course of time bring us different energies that give us inspiration, luck and opportunities – and can even influence our decision-making process in various ways, depending on the individual birth chart.

Generally speaking, September will be a rather pleasant month – and one that’s great to get things moving, particularly if you’ve been slacking over the past months. The ice giant Uranus, the seventh planet from the sun with the third-largest diameter in the solar system, is the highlight of this month.

The beginning of September will see Mars in Leo forming a lovely aspect with Uranus in Aries. This is encouraging news for everyone. Mars is the planet of fire, passion, action and motivation. When it tours the sign of Leo, a fire sign that’s the brightest star of the 12 zodiac signs, that means it’s time for action. Uranus, on the other hand, is a planet that brings sudden, unexpected changes, which could be disruptive. Aries is another fire sign that represents action and moving forward, for Mars is the ruling planet of this sign.

Thus, when Mars and Uranus form a harmonious and friendly aspect with each other, be prepared for action and sudden changes. Regardless of your sign, you’re encouraged to take the initiative and act on what you’ve been planning for the past months in 2017. Some of you might feel a bit sluggish since the beginning of the year, but September is the time to move forward. There could be sudden changes – such as job-related ones or moving house. But don’t be afraid; rather, embrace these changes, because they’ll only do you good in the long run. Fasten your seatbelt and enjoy the ride.

Uranus is also giving a friendly smile to Saturn this month. Saturn is the planet of structure and lessons, and is considered the most fearful planet among all because it forces us to face the truth about something that we’ve been denying. Now when Saturn, which is in Sagittarius – another sign that is on-the-go – is getting a beam from Uranus, you can take the opportunity and the responsibility to embrace new ideas and concepts brought about by the planet of disruption and innovative thinking. Disruptive though it might be, Uranus is also a planet of breaking new ground. We might have been put off by new thoughts and ideas, or didn’t take them seriously. But with Saturn, you’re ready for all the extraordinary notions that might change the course of your life.

Another aspect to highlight is Venus, which will also be Leo in the middle of September, receiving a wink from, again, Uranus. Venus is the goddess of love – a planet of beauty as well as money. The good news is that you might be showered with gifts of love all of a sudden, or you may have an urge to surround yourself with beautiful things. Be spontaneous – visit museums and galleries, go to a concert or buy a piece of nice clothing that will make you look pretty (just make sure you don’t overspend).

Towards the end of the month, Jupiter in Libra will be opposite Uranus. This is certainly not the most pleasant combination. Jupiter is the largest planet in the solar system, but it’s made almost entirely of gases – primarily hydrogen and helium. It’s seen as a lucky star because it expands whatever area it tours. Jupiter is comfortable to be the guest of Libra, as it helps one to see the importance and enjoy the benefits brought by balance, beauty and art that the sign represents.

But when Jupiter is at a hard angle with Uranus, such balance and expansion could be disrupted. You might desire a change of a life pattern or feel a great deal of discomfort when such changes are forced upon you.

Uranus might be intimidating and these disruptive changes might catch us off-guard, but rather than fighting against it, we should embrace these adjustments and make the most of it this September.

March is a month full of challenges. Despite the fact that taskmaster Saturn forms harmonious angles with the fiery red Mars and the rebellious Uranus, there’s a problem. Pluto, the planet of death and rebirth, is at difficult angles with Mars, Jupiter, Uranus and the moon. The alignment of the planets will have a different impact on different people, depending on your horoscope. So how will this affect you?

Marching On

February 24, 2017 / by Lily May Wong

Aries (Mar 21–Apr 19)

Mars is the planet of action that rules Aries – and a hard angle with Pluto could have a major impact on those who were born under this sign. Pluto is mysterious and scary, as it rules destruction. But without death, nothing new will be born. So if some of your projects or goals turn out to be fruitless, don’t fret. Embrace the changes and a new beginning will eventually arrive.

Taurus (Apr 20–May 20)

Those born in the sign of Taurus are better off in March compared to those born under other signs, as Venus, the ruling planet of Taurus, is free from any hard angles with other planets. But this does not mean Taureans should go wild. Taureans, who tend to enjoy extravagant material possessions and have great tastes in both art and lifestyle, are advised to be cautious with their spending.

Gemini (May 21–Jun 20)

Geminis are advised to act cautious, especially when it comes to making important decisions. This is because Mercury, the ruling planet of the sign, is at an unfavourable angle with the moon, which is responsible for our emotions, and is clouded by the dreamy Neptune. Mercury is the master of communication, but this month Mercury is not in its best shape. Think twice before making any decisions, dear Gemini.

Cancer (Jun 21–Jul 22)

Career is the focus of the month for Cancerians. Expect a positive vibe surrounding your workplace. It is the time to strike and move forward. But the transiting moon, your ruling planet, is at harsh angles with Neptune, which is likely to confuse your emotions. Avoid dealing with matters that strongly concern your emotions this month.

Leo (Jul 23–Aug 22)

Like Cancer, career is also the focus of the month for those who were born in the sign of Leo; however, the nature of the focus is quite different. Expect transformation in your career, whether it’s a change of job or a restructure of the workplace, which could affect your current position. It will likely be a positive move, so embrace the changes.

Virgo (Aug 23–Sep 22)

To those who were born in the sign of Virgo, March is not a month for matters of the heart – so this could be a disappointment for those single Virgos. However, this means you can direct your energy to your ambition, be it your career or other personal achievements. Luck will be on your side.

Libra (Sep 23–Oct 22)

Finding the right balance is the key for all Librans this month. Others will require your attention, whether it is in the workplace or the people around you, and you might feel drained by all these tasks. Thus, you need to strike a balance between your personal space and the outside world this month.

Scorpio (Oct 23–Nov 21)

Have your seat belt fastened in March, dear Scorpio. As this water sign is ruled by both Mars and Pluto, this could be quite a dramatic month. Expect sudden changes in areas ranging from home to career. Although the harmonious angle formed between Saturn and Mars might stabilise some of these changes, it’s better to be prepared.

Sagittarius (Nov 22–Dec 21)

Sagittarius has always been an extrovert, but March is the time for this outgoing sign to look inward. The alignment of the stars gives those who were born under this sign a heads up to focus on their personal well-being, from the physical to the psychological and the spiritual. It’s a month to slow down and reflect.

Capricorn (Dec 22–Jan 19)

March is a pretty stable month for the determined, practical and dependable Capricorn as transiting Saturn, the ruling planet, is acting quite friendly with Mars and Uranus. This helps bring out the positive qualities of the latter two planets while stabilising their fiery, unpredictable nature. Hence, domestic matters will be the focus, as your home is your source of stability.

Aquarius (Jan 20–Feb 18)

Similar to Capricorn, March is a month about stability and slowing down. The transiting Uranus, the ruling planet of Aquarius, is getting a friendly wink from Saturn, helping to calm the disruptive nature of this rebellious planet. Seize the time to take care of your personal well-being, dear Aquarius, as you will need this month to prepare yourself for the battles ahead.

Pisces (Feb 19–Mar 20)

Transiting Neptune, the ruling planet of Pisces, isn’t at the friendliest angle with Mars in March. Thus, there could be times where you’re not sure where you’re heading. But don’t fret – Pisceans are asked to listen to their hearts and take the time to clear things up before moving forward. This could be a fruitful month if you do it right.

The Year Ahead

February 3, 2017 / by Lily May Wong

You made it, you survived – and you should be proud of yourself. The year 2016 was a difficult one indeed, as we experienced the devastating deaths of some of the most important artists of our times, numerous wars and terrorist attacks, and political turmoil and instability around the world.

But don’t get ready to rest on your laurels just yet – surprises continue to be in store for us in 2017. Astrology is the study of planetary positions and the aspects they carry when pitted against each other, as well as how such things affect our emotions and energy fields. Each planet carries a unique meaning and energy, and their movements are different to each other. The sun, moon, Mercury, Venus and Mars move relatively fast in the cycle, so they’re good references for our day-to-day forecast. Meanwhile, Jupiter, Saturn and the three outer planets – Uranus, Neptune and Pluto – have a much more profound, lingering impact.

Jupiter is the biggest planet in the solar system. In astrology, it stands for expansion and sometimes luck. In 2017, Jupiter will spend most of the year touring Libra – a sign of beauty, balance, diplomacy and fairness.

When Jupiter is in Libra, these aspects will see an expansion. After a year of turbulence, 2017 might see an opportunity for reconciliation or a break from conflicts. If you want peace or reconciliation with a friend or a partner over past conflicts or misunderstandings, this is the year for you. It’s set to be a year for the beauty of humanity to shine.

In March, Jupiter will be opposite Uranus, a planet of revolution and disruption. There could be a chance for disruptive changes and conflicts to die down a bit. This month will also see Jupiter forming a hard angle with Pluto, a planet of death and regeneration. If you’re going through some sort of a self-regeneration, be prepared to face a more difficult time to achieve your goal.

In August, Jupiter will form a harmonious angle with Saturn, the planet known as the taskmaster. Saturn is a heavy planet – it weighs us down and wants to teach us a lesson, depending on its location. In August, Saturn will be touring Sagittarius, a sign of travel and spontaneity. This harmonious aspect will be favourable for those who want to travel – not just in the physical sense, but also on a spiritual level. This is a great time to learn to be open and playful, particularly if you have a fairly uptight personality.

Saturn will be going retrograde on April 6 – and it won’t go direct until August 25. When a planet is said to go retrograde, it doesn’t mean the planet is going backward – it only means that it’s moving relatively slower, as if it were going backward. Thus, when Saturn goes retrograde, it could mean our life lessons will fall a little behind schedule. The energy is heavy and isn’t at all times favourable, but don’t despair – this is only a phase.

The three outer planets of Uranus, Neptune and Pluto will all be going retrograde. The main one to watch is Pluto, the planet of death and rebirth. Compared to the others, Pluto is the smallest and the farthest away, but it has the profound meaning on our life’s journey. Pluto will go retrograde from April 20 to September 28. During this period, the process of regeneration will take much longer. This process could be painful, but be sure to allow yourself more patience and you’ll get through it eventually.

Last but not least, don’t forget the Mercury retrogrades. Mercury is the planet of communication. When it goes retrograde, it means anything related to communications will face delay, blockage and obstacles. It could also affect communication devices, such as your mobile phones and computers. Remember to back up your data and take good care of your devices, as they might break down or get stolen. Avoid buying any communication devices or signing related contracts during this period. Fasten your seat belt and get prepared for the following dates: April 9 to May 3, August 12 to September 5 and December 3 to 22.

I wish you a fabulous and prosperous 2017 as you strive to achieve your goals.

The Twin Effect

This month, take an in-depth look at the intriguing character of Gemini

The Twin Effect

May 27, 2016 / by Lily May Wong

June is predictably unpredictable. It marks the conclusion of the first half of the year, bringing us to review what we have (or haven’t) achieved before launching new plans for the second part of the year. There’s unstable weather that we must endure before moving into the full-blown hot summer. June’s unsettling nature resonates with the character of Gemini – a mutable sign that deserves an in-depth analysis, as this astrology column takes a new turn.

Those born from May 22 to June 21 have their sun angled at the constellation of Gemini during their time of birth. You probably know that Gemini is an air sign. You probably also know that Mercury, the planet of communication, is the ruling planet of the third of the 12 zodiac signs –and that makes Geminians great communicators. But what does being a Gemini actually mean in realistic terms? How do these characteristics affect the way you deal with Geminians and help you understand them better?

Getting to know a Geminian without going a bit mad requires a lot of patience and effort. You’re dealing with not one, but a twin sign here. In Greek mythology, Gemini is represented by the young and adventurous twin brothers Castor and Pollux, who were made immortal by Zeus so that they could live forever together as the stars of the Gemini constellation.

Inheriting the distinctive personalities of the twins, a Geminian is characterised by their eternal youth – and this has nothing to do with age. It’s an attitude towards life and the world around them. They’re like an inquisitive young child who approaches the world with the most curious eyes. They want to know everything, from what you ate for lunch to how Stephen Hawking’s latest theory will manifest. They’re always bubbly and they would probably die if you shut them up.

But a Geminian doesn’t have the patience to listen to your entire life story. All they need to hear is the gist of one story so that they can reserve their time and capacity for the next story. They care about the quantity much more so than the quality, for they have the talent to dress up
the details of every single story with their flair for communication, particularly in the realm of languages.

On the bright side, this makes Geminians marvellous storytellers. Whether they’re telling stories in writing or speech, they manage to translate their inherent charisma into a magical force that makes even the most boring plot sound fascinating. It’s an important skill in the 21st century, especially since storytelling defines the digital era. If you’re looking for a salesman at your company, a versatile writer or a social-media editor, you can’t go wrong with a Geminian.

On the downside, however, you might want to discount what Geminians say a little. Since they have such little patience and a low capacity for detail, they might not be getting the full picture of the whole story. They might know a little bit about everything – which makes them the best drinking buddy you could ever have – but their knowledge could only be skin-deep. You might want to verify the information they present before taking it too seriously.

And because they are extraordinary raconteurs, Geminians are usually very attractive and surrounded by friends – particularly those of the opposite sex. They’re known to be social butterflies, in the state of mind where they feel the most alive. But this is only a facade. When they’re left alone, they can sometimes be the saddest creatures on the planet – and they only reveal that face to a handful of people they trust.

Strictly speaking, there is a Geminian inside all of us. No matter when you were born, Gemini (in fact, all the star signs) plays a certain role in your birth chart. The sign’s impact is just a matter of degree. The more planets that are angled at Gemini at the time of your birth, the more Geminian you will be. In principle, the sun and moon are the most important, for the sun represents your core, while the moon stands for your emotions and subconscious. If your ascendant (also known as the rising sign) is Gemini, you will also carry strong traits of this twin sign, for the ascendant rules the outlook of our behaviour.

Regardless of planets or angles, dealing with all Geminians – including the one within you – requires patience and wittiness. Be prepared to play along!

Get Physical

April is a fairly uneventful month, so it serves as an ideal time to prepare for the long summer. Shedding all that winter fat and getting back into shape should be top priorities this month. But different sun signs don’t just have different personality traits – their ruling planets and characteristics also help determine what kinds of sport fit them best.

Get Physical

April 1, 2016 / by Lily May Wong

Aries (Mar 21Apr 19)

With the energetic and somewhat aggressive Mars as the ruling planet, those who were born with the sun in Aries are up for challenges and love to win. Thus competitive sports such as basketball, tennis, judo, karate and muay thai will meet their needs – and should help calm the excess aggressive energy directed from their ruling planet.

Taurus (Apr 20–May 20)

Though it might be a fairly bold thing to say, generally Taureans aren’t destined to be skinny. This stable earth sign tends to have a fuller figure and often a curvier body shape than other signs. But that doesn’t mean they can’t look good – being fit isn’t the same as being stick-figure thin, so
forget about that heavy aerobic workout that focuses on weight loss. Taureans should love themselves for who they are, and focus on light weight-training exercises that help tone their figures and tighten their muscles.

Gemini (May 21Jun 20)

Boredom is the last thing this twin sign can stand. Running on a treadmill at the gym is definitely a no-no. With Mercury, the planet of communication, ruling Gemini, they need a workout that not only engages their bodies, but also their active minds. Games that require lots of teamwork and strategising, such as football and baseball, will fit Gemini like a glove. The games will also be a great occasion to socialise – those born to this air sign are social butterflies.

Cancer (Jun 21–Jul 22)

This gentle water sign may not be a fan of vigorous activities. But this doesn’t mean Cancerians should stay away from a healthy routine to keep their bodies fit. This home-loving sign can still practise physical activities that are not too demanding and can be done in the house, such as yoga
and stretching.

Leo (Jul 23–Aug 22)

As ruled by the sun, those who were born in the sign of Leo like to think of themselves as the centre of the universe. When it comes to exercising, this is no exception. Workouts that help them boost their ego and confidence will give them the greatest satisfaction, so things that require a great deal of endurance, such as marathon training, would be a good option.

Virgo (Aug 23Sep 22)

Virgo is the master of perfection. They like everything in order and will only take calculated risks. Thus, exercising is a way for them to achieve physical perfection. It doesn’t mean they’re necessarily after six-pack abs, though; rather, they want something that’s fulfilling for their body and soul. Casual hiking that brings them outdoors for fresh air, surrounded by nature, fits the bill.

Libra (Sep 23–Oct 22)

Libra is all about beauty and elegance thanks to its ruling planet, Venus. Dancing would be a perfect choice, for it’s not just a cardio workout – the body movement can also satisfy Librans’ desire for attractiveness. There are plenty of options when it comes to dance: adult ballet, flamenco, ballroom, and even hip-hop and jazz dance. Librans are spoilt for choice.

Scorpio (Oct 23Nov 21)

Those who were born to this mysterious, sexy sign have a different take when it comes to exercise. While workouts are physical training to stay fit, it’s also a way for them to channel the sexy energy brought together by their ruling planets, Pluto and Mars. Consider alternative workouts such as pole dancing – it’s physically demanding, but at the same time allows them to unleash their unique power through performance.

Sagittarius (Nov 22Dec 21)

Sagittarius is a wild horse – it should roam freely instead of being confined in an enclosed space. This adventurous sign loves to exercise outdoors and do things that could be considered a little risky for many others, such as outdoor trekking, as well as more extreme activities such as bungee jumping or paragliding.

Capricorn (Dec 22–Jan 19)

This earth sign ruled by Saturn is the most pragmatic one of all. They won’t waste their time on things that bring them no results. Thus, exercises that are cost-effective and time-efficient will meet their needs. Swimming and running, which can be done at almost any time anywhere (and at a very low cost) would be good options.

Aquarius (Jan 20Feb 18)

Aquarians are the brainy ones. Working out isn’t really their cup of tea, but they’ll still do it because their intelligent mind tells them it’s something they need to do to stay fit. For the most intellectual sign of all 12, exercise serves a functional purpose. In this regard, they’re quite similar to Capricorn – perhaps they can pair up to become running or swimming buddies with the earth sign.

Pisces (Feb 19–Mar 20)

Pisces is a sign full of imagination thanks to its dreaming guardian planet, Neptune. Therefore, to Pisceans, exercise is just another outlet to unleash their creative power – and a creative workout routine that combines cardio and weight-training exercises will do well. A variation of Pilates and yoga on the beach or in the park, or quirky weight-training methods such as the back lever, might suit these creative types.

Moon Shine

September 25, 2015 / by Lily May Wong

There is one section in newspapers or magazines that I always skip – the horoscopes.

You might be laughing your heads off right now and asking yourselves: why should I read an astrology column written by someone who doesn’t even read horoscopes?

Don’t get me wrong: I strongly believe that our fates are written in the stars. We are destined to cross paths with certain people, face certain circumstances and make decisions in a particular way. Astrology is an intricate system derived from ancient wisdom, based on calculation of the positions of the stars and the angles and aspects they cast on each other at particular times and locations. This system gives us clues to the world we inhabit and guidance to help us navigate around it. It’s not about being superstitious. Based on these calculations, I have a much better understanding of myself and am better prepared for both opportunities and crises. Trust me, it works.

Astrology is very complicated, and it's reductive to group billions of humans into just 12 zodiac signs, making the same predictions for all of the people within each. The horoscopes you read in the mass media are based on the sun Sign – that is, the sign of the zodiac in which the sun was positioned at birth. The sun remains in one sign for about 30 days, and so people born at certain times belong to certain so-called signs of the zodiac.

The sun is the brightest object in our solar system. It is the source of light and our source of life. We wouldn’t exist without the sun, and we wouldn't survive without the effect of its rays on us. The sun is our core. Its position tells people what their basic character is and indicates our relationship with men, particularly our father.

But to really understand a person, we need to look at the positions of all other celestial bodies: for a start, the moon. The moon, as we all know, is Earth’s only natural satellite. It isn’t a source of light like the sun, but we can see the moon clearly at night because it reflects light from the sun. In astrological terms, the moon represents our emotions, instincts and unconscious drives in reaction to the outside world. Its position also says a lot about our relationship with women, especially our mother, and what makes us feel at home. If the sun is what we are on the outside, the moon is what we are on the inside.

While many believe that our physical appearance has a lot to do with our ascendent, which we will cover another time, how we style ourselves is also strongly associated with the moon; they both reflect who we really are.
